  Notes	Passenger ship abstracts shows a Joseph Bartlett coming from England toCambridge 1666, along with John Bartlett. Resided in part of Cambridge which became New Cambridgetown, shortened to Newton. One account says he settled in Cambridge 1666, another says 1668. Oct 25 1671: Joseph convicted of "uncivil and rude carriages towards hiswife". Middlesex court records. Records for March 3, 1673 indicate a "pore and low condition,having noe house, and very pore conditions" so he was granted a "small allowance, and help to build him a house". JUL 1673 deed of gift from Robert Bartlett to son Joseph 2 JUL 1678 Bought land in Plymouth from Father-in-lawThomas Pope. JUL 1678 Wine Cooper 1678 Joseph Bartlett was a signer of a petition to the court forCambridge to be seperated from Cambridge Village. Page 52 17 JUL 1680 Deposed in a court case, stating he was about 41years of age Oral family tradition: according to a letter from cousin Alice Bartlett Westgate, March 1968, her grandfather told her that there were 5 brotherswho came from England to Pennsylvania, then 2 went West (whatever thatmeant), 1 went to Maine, and 2 remained in Pennsylvania. The ship abstracts show at least 4 Bartletts that came to America in 1666. Joseph went to Massachusetts and went on an expedition to explore what was then Sudbury Canada, which eventually became Bethel Maine, and hisexploration of this wild and dangerous territory entitled his grandsonsto land once Bethel became settled. Joseph's residence was on the side of the hill now occupied by theBaptist Theological Seminary, about ninety rods southeast of the presentrailroad station at Newton Center (The cellar is still visible in the1990's). In 1675 he possessed a dwelling and four acres of land, as shownby a mortgage then recorded (see New England Families Genealogical and Memorial, Vol IV, p 2031).
